Apple Reportedly Planning Complete iTunes Overhaul

iTunes 10.6

iTunes – I like it, but I don’t. The software is s great for managing the music that I own and for finding new applications, the two reasons I use it most, but I use Spotify for 99% of all of my music listening. I also no longer own an iPhone, so I don’t really use it for managing my phone anymore. Thankfully, it’s reportedly about to get a complete overhaul.

Bloomberg reported recently that Apple is planning to totally overhaul iTunes and will give it the biggest makeover since 2003. The update isn’t expected to land until near the end of the year, but Apple will allegedly tightly integrate iTunes with its iCloud service and will introduce a new music sharing feature. We imagine this could ultimately lead to shared playlists, one of our favorite features of Spotify.

Reportedly, Apple will let iTunes users share their favorite songs with friends for free — although we imagine they’ll only be able to listen to it a couple of times before they are prompted to purchase the track. Unfortunately, Bloomberg said Apple isn’t likely to introduce a streaming music service that would compete with Rdio, Spotify and several other options currently on the market.
