Research In Motion

Research In Motion is reportedly considering splitting up the company into two divisions, one that would focus on the firm’s handset and tablet efforts and one that would focus on its popular messaging solutions. The news was first reported by The Sunday Times. We reported in late May that RIM had hired JP Morgan and RBC Capital, a move that suggested it was possibly considering a sale or a different drastic strategy change — but it’s also possible those companies were hired to advise a possible split. Facebook and Amazon were cited as “potential buyers” of the firm’s handset business, Reuters said. Facebook is reportedly exploring building its own smartphone and it would make sense for the company to bolster its patent portfolio before doing so.
