Ikaruga Creator Returns with 3DS SHMUP, Kokuga

Hiroshi Iuchi might not command the same respect as Shigeru Miyamoto, Hideo Kojima, or other household name Japanese developers; but, amongst the hardcore SHMUP (shoot ’em up) crowd, he is well renowned with big name titles like Radiant Silvergun, Gradius V, and Ikaruga under his belt.

A long time employee of Treasure dating back to the Sega Genesis and currently freelance, Inouchi is finally returning to form on the 3DS after a decade long hiatus with a slick looking SHMUP titled Kokuga.

Iuchi’s games are popular amongst genre fans for their well balanced systems and original mechanics as opposed to the reflex-heavy bullet-hell SHMUPs, which dominate Japanese arcades. Kokuga does not give in to the popular Japanese trend either, but is rather taking a book from Western SHMUPs and the dual-analog style found all over Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network, and iOS.

As with all 3DS trailers, the 3D effects can’t be rendered, but the four player co-op looks promising.

The official website points to September 27th as the release date for Japan. Check out the popular masterpieces Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun in the meantime on Xbox Live for 800 and 1,200 Xbox Live Points respectively.
