Samsung Files a Patent for Next-Gen NFC-Friendly Stylus

by Mark Hearn | June 16, 2012June 16, 2012 5:00 pm PDT

Some consumers and critics may think the stylus as outdated, but Samsung has managed to breathe life into this once commonly used mobile accessory with products such as its “S Pen” device, which is bundled with the Galaxy Note. The South Korea-based electronics maker has filed a patent for what appears to be a follow up to its S or C Pens. Unlike its predecessors, this pen will include a wireless receiver in its clip, possibly giving it the ability to double as an earpiece. We’ve already seen similar technology in the ASUS Padfone stylus. NFC also appears to be a focal point of this patent filing and it will perhaps be used to exchange information with the stylus and a primary host device, such as a smartphone or tablet.

While all of this may be intriguing, we’re not banking on seeing anything hitting retail anytime soon. However, it’s good to see that Samsung appears to be focused on bringing innovation to products that many appear to have given up on.
