It should go without saying that China is an important market for any phone maker and, as of Thursday, Apple is set to expand its retail presence there. The company was granted the go-ahead to open new Apple Store locations in Shenzhen and Chengdu, government officials told The Wall Street Journal. As of Wednesday, June 6, Apple is now allowed to own and operate an Apple Store in Shenzhen’s Yitian Holiday Plaza mall, China’s Market Supervision Administration of Shenzhen Municipality said. A separate Chinese official told The Wall Street Journal that a similar approval was granted in May by the Chengdu Industry and Commerce Administration. Apple’s iPhone sales for the second quarter of this year were 5x the sales the company had during the same quarter last year, The Wall Street Journal explained.
