This 1989 Radio Shack commercial for “transportable phones” is just delicious in how quaint it seems.
We like to make a joke around the TechnoBuffalo offices about if a phone is too big to fit into the pocket of skinny jeans. With devices like the Galaxy Note growing to incredible sizes, you just have to wonder how big phones can get. Luckily the 1980s answered that for us with “transportable phones.”
Yes, there was a day when you literally had to sling a phone over your shoulder on a strap if you wanted to walk and talk with it. And hey, that convenience would only set you back $799! That would be the same as $1,484 in 2012 money accounting for inflation. Suddenly buying a phone off contract these days doesn’t seem so insane.
Of course, the deal breaker here is that the phones didn’t even play Snake, so it just wasn’t worth it.
