AT&T CEO Thinks Data-Only Phone Plans Are Inevitable

While on a recent investor conference call, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson expressed his feelings about data only cellphone plans being the wave of the future in the world of wireless. The AT&T exec stated that he’d “be surprised if, in the next 24 months, we don’t see people in the market place with data-only plans.” Mr. Stephenson could definitely be on to something, especially as media consumption continues to become more and more a part of our mobile lifestyles and the tablet market continues to grow. Users are also gravitating to services such as Skype, which allow you to place calls or send text messages over a data network. However, it should be noted that wireless carriers currently make most of their money off of calling and texting plans, so we expect carriers to continue pushing those options hard.
