PayPal Teams Up With U.K. Retailers to Bring Smartphone Payments to the High Street

NFC payments are yet to really take off here in the U.K. While you can find retailers that except them here and there, they are an extremely rare sight on most high streets. But who needs NFC when you can enjoy PayPal’s new InStore service instead?

PayPal has teamed up with four major British retailers — Coast, Karen Millen, Oasis, and Warehouse — to launch its new “InStore” payment service that allows you to purchase good using only your smartphone. The service will debut in 230 stores across the U.K. from tomorrow, May 31.

To take advantage of InStore, you’ll need to download and install the InStore application on your smartphone. It’s currently available to Android and iOS devices. Those in the United States may already be familiar with the service, because it’s already available in Home Depot stores nationwide. But for those who aren’t, here’s how it works.

Once you have the InStore app installed on your smartphone, simply load it up and login using your PayPal account. The app then provides you with your own unique barcode. Simply present this to the cashier in a participating retailer when checking out your goods, and they’ll scan it — your items will then be paid for using your PayPal account.

The great thing about InStore is that unlike other mobile payment services, it works offline, so you don’t need a data connection to use it. Furthermore, it also presents offers to you for each retailer as you shop, ensuring you never miss a deal.

Will you be using PayPal InStore?
