Apple Takes Top Spot As World’s Largest Shipper of Mobile PCs, Tablets; China Propels Growth

Apple - Earnings - Money

Apple’s iPad helped the company maintain the top spot as the world’s largest shipper of mobile PCs according to a recent report published by NPD. The company shipped roughly 17.2 million mobile PCs during the first quarter of this year, up 118% year-over-year and representing a 22.5% market share. NPD’s preliminary DisplaySearch Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report also said the company shipped more than 13.6 million iPads during the quarter, up 162% from the first quarter of 2011.

The entire industry shipped 76.2 million units during the quarter. That figure is down 15% from the fourth quarter of last year but up 30% from the same quarter in 2011. Tablet PCs have grown 124% year-over-year and notebooks and mini-notes grew 12%, NPD said. “The China region had sequential quarter shipment growth, achieving 13% for mobile PCs overall, 12% for notebook and mini-note PCs, and 16% for tablet PCs,”NPD DisplaySearch Senior Analyst Richard Sim explained. “This is noteworthy given the sequential declines in all other regions as well as the declines in other product categories including TVs and monitors.”

HP followed Apple as the second largest mobile PC vendor with 8.9 million units shipped and an 11.6% market share. It is followed by Acer with 6.9 million shipped units and a 9% market share, Lenovo, which shipped 5.9 million units and has a 7.7% market share and Dell, which shipped 5.6 million units for a 7.3% share of the market.

The scene is a bit different in the notebook and mini-note PC shipment market. HP is the top vendor there with 8.9 million units shipped and a 16.2% market share. It was also one of the only companies that increased its year-over-year shipments with nearly 700,000 additional units shipped over the same quarter last year. Acer has an 11.9% share with 6.5 million units shipped follow by Lenovo (10.6% share, 5.8 million units shipped), Dell (10.2% share, 5.6 million units shipped) and ASUS (8.1% share, 4.4 million units shipped). NPD said the top brands “took a conservative stance on shipments” to increase “focus on margins and profits as opposed to market share.”

Apple is also still dominating the tablet PC market with a 62.8% share and 13.6 million units shipped. Its closest competitors were Samsung with a 7.5% share and 1.6 million units shipped and Amazon with a 4% share and 0.9 million units shipped.
