Three U.K. has confirmed that it will soon be offering the new Sony Xperia U on contracts starting from just £15 (approx. $24) per month. The handset will be free, as long as you’re willing to sign up for a two-year commitment.
Alternatively, Three is also offering the handset with a pay-as-you-go SIM for just £179.99 (approx. $285), which we think is a fairly reasonable price for a handset like the Xperia U.
Announced at Mobile World Congress back in February, the Xperia U is the entry-level handset in Sony’s current “NXT” Xperia lineup. But it’s certainly not a handset you’ll want to ignore, especially if you’re in the market for a budget smartphone. In addition to a 1GHz dual-core processor, the device features a 3.5-inch FWVGA Reality Display, and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera capable of shooting 720p HD video.
The Xperia U also boasts NFC communication technology, and although it will ship with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, an Ice Cream Sandwich update is expected to follow shortly after its launch. One of its most unique features is the light-up bar along the bottom of the handset which changes color based on what’s displayed onscreen.
Three is yet to announce a launch date for the device, but now that prices are on their way, you can expect availability details to follow shortly.
