Rumors are circulating this morning that Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson is preparing to step down from the company.

According to All Things D, the Yahoo board of directors is meeting today, which will result in Thompson leaving the role of CEO he assumed in January for “personal reasons.”  This is of course in the wake of the scandal over his bio listing he had a Bachelors degree in Computer Science that has since been discovered to be untrue.

It appears that Yahoo global media head Ross Levinsohn will take up the role of interim CEO once Thompson has stepped down.

All of this has to be approved by the board when it meets today, but it is looking like this will be the likely scenario.  The result could also see five members of the board who were scheduled to step down this summer at an election will instead leave their postions immediately.

More on this as it develops, but it looks like it’s going to be a very unhappy Mother’s Day at Yahoo.
