Beyond Good and Evil 2 Being Developed on Next Gen Hardware

It looks as if Beyond Good & Evil 2 is in development to be one of the first titles we see on the next generation of consoles.

In an interview with Michel Ancel, the lead designer behind the project, Ancel wouldn’t speak to which console the game would eventually be released on, but he did say:

“We focus on the game. We create it first, then we’ll see what can run it. We don’t say 2013 because we don’t know when it will come. We’re working to create a great game and it needs more tech.”

That right there is an blatant hint that the game will need the horsepower behind a next generation console to support it, which confirms statements Ancel made previously about the game not shipping on current generation hardware. Ancel also added that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is “a very ambitious game.” This is already sounding like a treat for all the graphic junkies out there.

All we’ve seen from Beyond Good & Evil 2 thus far is the leaked gameplay above. When asked about it, Ancel said:

“We use a very dynamic camera that shakes a lot during the action to add life to the camera giving the impression of an action news cover team following Jade. Maybe that could be similar to Mirror’s Edge but the game itself is very different.”

You can tell by the footage that game does resemble the basic gameplay dynamics that Mirror’s Edge offers, but it’s still very different. Ancel even said that “we had this concept even before Mirror’s Edge launched.”

Unlike its predecessor, Beyond Good & Evil 2 is taking aim at a larger scale audience this time around. They want to open it up to the casual gamers out there rather than having it basically limited to its cult-like following. It’s a good sign when a developer want to expand their audience, but hopefully they can do so while preserving the basic fundamentals which made Beyond Good & Evil what it is.

Seeing that the console that Beyond Good & Evil 2 will be released on has yet to be announced, we don’t expect to get a release date on the title any time soon. It’s certainly exciting to see one of the titles set to run on next generation hardware being talked about, and as more facts surface we will be sure to share them here on TechnoBuffalo.
