Anyone who’s ever had an iPhone replaced at the Genius Bar will know that Apple rarely hands you a brand new handset still wrapped up in its box. Instead, the Cupertino company gives you a refurbished device that has been spruced up and made to look like it was never caressed by greasy palms.
However, iPhone 4 replacement stock is beginning to dwindle, which is great news for iPhone 4 owners. No, it doesn’t mean you’ll get a brand new iPhone 4; it’s even better than that. Genius Bar employees are reportedly being told to provide a free upgrade to the iPhone 4S instead.
9to5Mac reports that Apple is facing constraints of black 16GB and 32GB iPhone 4 units, and that Genius Bars without these handsets have been instructed to replace them with 16GB and 32GB iPhone 4S handsets instead. Not every store is facing this issue, “but many are,” according to the report.
Also, 9to5Mac notes that these constraints should clear up within a few weeks, so if you’ve been meaning to take your iPhone 4 in for replacement, do it now.
