Nintendo would know. They launched the Nintendo 3DS into the market without much in the way of software to support it. The result? They found their brand new hardware suffering from a high price tag and poor game selection. No one wanted a machine without anything to play. Miyamoto admitted as much in an interview with EDGE:
“When we launched the 3DS hardware we didn’t have Super Mario 3D Land, we didn’t have Mario Kart 7, we didn’t have Kid Icarus: Uprising…We were striving to have all of these ready for the launch, but we weren’t able to deliver them at that time.
We were kind of hoping that people would, nevertheless, buy into the product, find 3DS hardware promising, but looking back we have to say we realise the key software was missing when we launched the hardware.”
As for the PS Vita, the Nintendo legend went on the talk about its strengths and weaknesses, the latter of which being the same as the Nintendo 3DS’ original plight:
“It’s obviously a very hi-spec machine, and you can do lots of things with it…But I don’t really see the combination of software and hardware that really makes a very strong product.”
One could easily argue that both the Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita have weak software libraries. However, games for both platforms sit on the horizon. More than that, E3 is just over a month away. If Sony and Nintendo parade out a stream of quality software for their brand new handhelds, both the PS Vita and 3DS will be just fine.
