Microsoft Names All Four Versions of Windows 8

Windows 8 is set to become the operating system’s biggest overhaul since Windows 3.1, and from what we’ve already heard in recent months, it’s going to be terrific. While it will be easy to make a decision on upgrading, then, the difficulty will be choosing which version of Windows 8 you’re going to purchase.

There will be four different versions altogether, one of which will be built for tablets and PCs powered by ARM processors, named Windows RT. Windows RT won’t actually be available for you to purchase, and will be pre-installed on new systems instead.

That leaves you with three different options for your desktop, including Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, and Windows 8 Enterprise.

Windows 8, as its name suggests, is the basic Windows 8 operating system without any fancy add-ons. This will be the number one choice for “most” consumers, Microsoft says. Some of its most notable features include an updated Windows Explorer, Task Manager, better multi-monitor support, and the ability to switch languages on the fly.

Windows 8 Pro will be aimed at “tech enthusiasts and business/technical professionals.” It includes everything you get in Windows 8, plus additional features for encryption, virtualization, PC management and domain connectivity.

If you’re a Windows Media Center user, you’ll be forced into purchasing Windows 8 Pro, because it isn’t available to Windows 8 basic customers. But don’t expect it to come with Windows 8 Pro as standard; it’s “an economical “media pack” add-on” that you’ll have to purchase separately.

Finally, Windows 8 Enterprise is, of course, aimed at the enterprise market. Microsoft is yet to provide any details on this package, but it’s unlikely you’ll want this one for your home PC.

So there are your options for Windows 8. You now have a few months before its release to decide which one you’re going to buy.
