Hulu May Move to Authentication to Stop Cord Cutting

Hulu stop

That plan you had to cut your cable subscription so you could just watch everything on Hulu may need some fine-tuning in the near future.

It seems that Hulu may be joining the ranks of services such as HBO GO that require to prove you have a current cable subscription to use them.  According to sources that spoke with the New York Post, Hulu is in the first stages of adding an authentication measure to its service.

The sources that spoke with the paper said it was actually this plan that led to the news last week that Providence Equity Partners was cashing out of it 10 percent stake in the online venture.

For current users of the service, it is expected to take several years before the authentication is completely in place, but if Hulu was a big part of your push to get rid of your cable bill, you may need to think twice now.  Of course, one has to wonder if the service will continue to charge for Hulu Plus once this is in place as you would essentially be paying for the same content twice.
