After years of waiting for Sony to release a PSP phone, loyal gamers and Android enthusiast alike were met with the Xperia Play. It was a solid smartphone in most regards, but due to its modest internals, the Xperia Play was far from the gaming powerhouse that fans of Sony’s PlayStation brand had been expecting. Not exactly a flop, the world’s first PlayStation Certified device obviously didn’t meet Sony’s market expectations, but a recent patent application suggests that another Xperia Play device could be in the works.
Filed back in October 2010, the patent application reveals a design concept for a touchscreen device that would also use a sliding keyboard, as well as a sliding gamepad. It remains uncertain if such a product would ever see the light of day, but with Sony moving as far as filing a patent, it definitely suggests that the company has interest. There’s no doubt that a device loaded with so much external hardware is likely to be a bit on the chunky side, but we’re almost certain that people will overlook a little extra heft if it means they’re getting the true PlayStation Phone that they’ve been waiting on for so long.
