Before the middle of next month, if you call yourself a Portal 2 player and you own the game on a PC or Mac, you’ll be able to download a free puzzle editor from Steam.

Valve let the world know about its upcoming “Portal 2 Perpetual Testing Initiative” by way of press release (which you can read in full by clicking the fancy pants button at the base of this post). In that release, the company explained that this puzzle maker will let users “easily create, share, and play Portal 2 puzzles.”

We hope “easy” means easy. Level editors are great when they can be easily interpreted and implemented by the masses. If this Portal 2 puzzle editor is as easy to use as Valve claims, we can’t wait to see what the public comes up with. Our brains are cramping in anticipation.

This free goodness will be available by way of Steam for both PC and Mac Portal 2 owners on May 8th.

Portal 2 Perpetual Testing Initiative Begins May 8

April 26, 2012 — Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the free Portal 2 DLC titled “Perpetual Testing Initiative” will be available for the PC and Mac on May 8th.

The “Perpetual Testing Initiative” allows players to easily create, share, and play Portal 2 puzzles. The Initiative comes with a simplified puzzle maker that allows that creation of mind-bending puzzles without ever leaving the game.

The puzzle maker can directly publish maps to the Steam Workshop where users can browse, vote on, and select to play them. Selected puzzles will automatically be downloaded and installed inside Portal 2.

Portal 2 holds a Metacritic score of 95% and has been awarded numerous Game of Year awards. It features expansive single and cooperative multiplayer game modes.
