New Super Mario Bros. 2 for 3DS Coming this August

Where Super Mario 3D Land was a title that felt like a blend of Super Mario Galaxy and Mario 64, New Super Mario Bros. 2 looks like it falls directly in line with the spirit of its titular predecessors. New Super Mario Bros. (for the DS) and New Super Mario Bros. Wii were both 2D titles, and this game looks to be in the same vein.

Nintendo of America made the announcement via Twitter last night. Their Tweet included the picture you see at the head of this post and a bit more. Here it is:

Mario fans get excited b/c New Super Mario Bros. 2 is launching for Nintendo #3DS in August!

The news comes by way of an event held in Japan. Nintendo’s announcement that this title will launch in August suggests that the month of release is at least good for both Japan and North America.

Based on the screenshot above, it looks like we’ll see a return of the traditional Raccoon Tail and its classic flight ability. We first saw this in Super Mario Bros. 3 for the NES.

As more comes for this game, including screenshots and trailers, we’ll have it.

UPDATE:  We just received this from Nintendo by way of email:

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a traditional side-scrolling adventure game featuring Mario, Luigi and loads of other favorite characters from the popular Mario series. The game was created specifically as a pick-up-and-play experience that can be instantly enjoyed by players of all skill levels on the Nintendo 3DS system. The game will launch across North America in August.

Along with that bit of details was news of a Kirby collection for Wii. Here’s that, too:

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the cute-but-powerful Kirby character, Nintendo will release a special anniversary software disc for Wii later this year. The disc will contain a variety of previously released, fan-favorite Kirby games. Additional Kirby anniversary activities will be revealed at a later date.

Again, as more comes, we’ll have it.
