In this weekly column, we’ll be selecting inexpensive, discarded titles from still playable consoles for your perusal. They may be games you’ve heard of and remember playing, or they may be games that have flown completely off of your radar. Just know that we love them and they’re available on the cheap. That’s a bonafide win/win situation.
If you have any favorite titles that you consider hidden gems, let us know in the comments below and we might feature your pick in the weekly column.
Platform: Xbox LIVE Arcade, PC
Original Release: 2009
Before ‘Splosion Man and Ms ‘Splosion Man, Twisted Pixel developed (along with Hothead Games) and released The Maw. This game set the players in the shoes of an alien named Frank as he controlled the Maw.
You’re charged with guiding the Maw through a series of obstacles in order to escape a crashed ship. The Maw can take on physical properties of whatever it consumes, and that leads to a creative set of gameplay changes and puzzle solving.
The major flaw with this title, aside from perhaps the fact that the price point for it on XBLA won’t drop, is that it’s short. Too short. Gamers can finish The Maw in one ore two sittings, if they like. There’s the pitch that you can always return to collect everything that’s too be collected, but I’m willing to be most folks just dropped the title as soon as it was beaten.
This Hidden Gem is certainly not as obscure as some of the other titles that we’ve covered; but, that doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone out there has had a chance to play this game. The Maw can be purchased over Xbox LIVE or for the PC. It’s not too expensive at all.
