Asus PadFone Pre-Orders Begin Tomorrow for Mid-April Launch in Taiwan

ASUS PadFone

Just as promised back in early March, Asus will be launching its Padfone later this month. The Taiwanese company announced this morning that pre-orders for the device will begin tomorrow for a mid-April launch in Taiwan. If you want to get your hands on this device in the U.S., you’ll probably want to start saving now, because it isn’t exactly cheap.

The phone itself, which you’ll probably want to purchase first, has been priced at NT$17,900 (approx. $610). If you want to bundle that with the tablet dock, the Bluetooth earpiece, and a stylus, then the price increases to NT$24,980 (approx. $850). But of course, that’s not everything. For the Transformer-style keyboard dock, you can add an additional NT$3,921 (approx. $130) to that price.

If you’re determined to grab the complete collection, then, you can expect to pay around $980. That’s a huge price to pay for what is essentially a smartphone with some clever accessories.

To put that price tag into perspective, $980 would buy you a 16GB iPhone 4S on AT&T for $199, a new 16GB iPad with LTE for $629, and still have $152 left over for a fancy keyboard dock.

Asus hasn’t announced its exact price structure for other territories, or release dates for other countries just yet. But are you looking forward to the Padfone?
