Rovio did a tremendous job of launching its latest title, Angry Birds Space, across multiple platforms yesterday, reaching Android, iOS, Mac, and PC. The title is already rocketing to the top of app store charts, claiming the number one spot in the iOS App Store on its first day.
The game is clearly a huge hit among Angry Birds fans, so Rovio understandably wants to reach every platform it can. One that it won’t be aiming for, however, is Windows Phone. The Finnish company has confirmed that it has “no plans” to develop the title for Microsoft’s mobile operating system.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Rovio’s chief marketing officer, Peter Vesterbacka, said that developing for Windows Phone is too much work for such a small user base:
“We’re the No. 1 app in the Windows Phone app store, but it’s a big undertaking to support it, and you have to completely rewrite the application.
“If you look at activations, Apple’s iOS and Android are clearly bigger than any other platform. We want to be on all screens, but we have to consider the cost of supplying the smaller platforms. With Windows Phone it’s a lot of work to technically support it.”
The news will be a disappointment to Windows Phone users, I’m sure. But I doubt it will be enough to convince you to switch platforms. If it is, it’s possible your Angry Birds addiction is getting out of control and we’d advise you to seek professional help.
Even without its latest title on Windows Phone, Rovio is expected to reach a whopping 1 billion cumulative downloads over the next few months, and 2 billion by the end of the year. That’s pretty incredible.
Are you disappointed that Angry Birds Space won’t be coming to Windows Phone?
