Sony will soon add another LittleBigPlanet themed title to their PlayStation 3 library of software with LittleBigPlanet Karting. The company confirmed the existence of this title on Twitter back in the second week of February. Now, they’ve gone and made it completely official with a full post on the PlayStation Blog and the trailer you see at the head of this article.
As a point of personal note, I’m excited to see a racer with the LittleBigPlanet look and its typical musical soundtrack. LittleBigPlanet and its sequel shared incredible music; a karting game with the same mantra sounds wonderful to me.
With all of that in mind, this is a bit of a bittersweet moment for fans of the other major karting game in Sony’s PlayStation 3/PS Vita catalogue: ModNation Racers. The company developing LittleBigPlanet Karting is the same company responsible for ModNation, United Front Games. While Sony hasn’t clarified that the introduction of LBP Karting means the end of ModNation, one has to assume the company wouldn’t need two separate karting titles from the same developer running simultaneously.
What’s nice here, however, is that United Front Games has already demonstrated with the ModNation series that they’re more than capable of engaging communities with content creation. After all, that’s the common thread that both LittleBigPlanet and ModNation share, user-generated content.
An exact release date was not clarified for LBP Karting; the game is set to launch this year.
Once Sony and UFG release more news and assets for LittleBigPlanet Karting, we’ll have them.
