Hidden Gems: Bombastic

In this weekly column, we’ll be selecting inexpensive, discarded titles from still playable consoles for your perusal. They may be games you’ve heard of and remember playing, or they may be games that have flown completely off of your radar. Just know that we love them and they’re available on the cheap. That’s a bonafide win/win situation.

If you have any favorite titles that you consider hidden gems, let us know in the comments below and we might feature your pick in the weekly column.

Bombastic
Platform: PlayStation 2
Original Release: 2003

Bombastic is one of the most unique puzzle games I can remember checking out on the PlayStation 2. This sequel to the original PlayStation’s Devil Dice has players control a character on screen that rolls dice in order to connect numbers, spark combos and unleash explosions.

It’s a bizarre game that puts forth a strong learning curve. It takes getting used to, I won’t lie; but, if you have a PlayStation 2 (or one of the early, backwards compatible PlayStation 3s) and a friend willing to play, Bombastic can be incredible. Once you learn the gameplay, it’s the type of title that’s capable of pulling players in for hours on end.

To give you an idea of how games roll (had to do it, sorry), I found a quick gameplay clip on the tubes for you:

You can find Bombastic for practically nothing at places like Amazon if you’re willing to buy it used. We’re talking $1 or $2, plus shipping. If quick and challenging puzzle games are your thing, consider checking it out.
