Apple is growing at such a rapid rate that there’s a strong possibility the company will dethrone Intel as the world’s largest chip company by the end of 2012. According to research firm InStat, demand for the iPhone and iPad in 2011 was so high that there was only a .4 percent gap separating the two – Apple shipped about 176 million chips in its iOS devices, while Intel shipped 181 million chips. (One minor stipulation: Samsung manufactures Apple’s processors.) A claim like this would have sounded pretty outrageous just a few short years ago, but now that Apple has announced that it sold more then 3 million new iPad units on opening weekend – with the potential to sell 12 million this quarter alone — it appears to be all but inevitable. Just wait until the next iPhone hits.
