Apple recently confirmed that it sold 3 million iPads during the tablet’s initial three days on the market (plus 9 days of pre-orders). That’s an incredible amount of sales in such a short time period and the acceleration clearly has analysts excited. So excited, in fact, that one analyst believes Apple could sell as many as 12 million new iPads this quarter. That’s not out of reach, however. In fact, Apple sold 15.43 million iPads during the first quarter of this year.
“Apple has sold ~750,000 new iPads per day since launch on Friday,” UBS analyst Maynard Um said in a client note Tuesday. “If there are no supply shortages, this would imply a run rate of ~12 million new iPads between launch and the end of the quarter. We continue to believe there could be upside to our 12 million estimate for the quarter.” It’s important to note that Um is referring to new iPads, and isn’t including sales of the older generation iPad 2, which is now just $399. Sounds like Apple could have yet another gangbuster quarter — we’ll see.
