In Italian, Berlinetta means “little saloon,” though Ferrari’s latest F12 Berlinetta supercar resembles more of a nuclear powerplant than a dusty gin joint. The key element of the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta is that it’s the most powerful Ferrari to date, boasting a 740HP naturally aspirated V12. The F12 spews 80% of its 509 lb.-ft. of torque to the rear wheels from a 2,500 RPM range all the way to redline, ensuring a hellish bite all the way from a low rev. Now even though this is the most powerful Ferrari to date, the Pagani Huayra produces a menacing 740 lb.-ft. of torque. However, the F12 Berlinetta might take the Huayra on longer stretches, thanks to its additional 31 horses. When you compare both cars to the formidable Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, well, there’s really no comparison to a machine that huffs and puffs 1,200HP and 1,106 lb.-ft. of torque right out of the starting gates.
Architecturally, the F12 Berlinetta has evolved from the 599 GTB Fiorano with bold “Aero Bridge” scoops along the front sides of the car and reduced weight in areas beyond the wheelbase. This resulted in a 76% increase in downforce figure compared to the Fiorano, along with a 154 lb. savings in weight. Despite its sporty enhancements, the car is still able to accommodate some heavy luggage and full-size adults. With dual-coil suspension, a lower center of gravity and state-of-the-art carbon/ceramic calipers and rotors, the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta is more than just a fancy way to pick up groceries.
In fact, you can pick up groceries by going up to 211MPH (0-62 in 3.1 seconds) on the back roads to the supermarket. And if you have the patience to wait a full 8.5 seconds from a full stop with the pedal jammed to the floor, you’ll see 124MPH. While the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta is certainly one of the more muscular supercars in looks and performance, it’s not a far cry from Chevy’s Camaro and Ford’s Mustang when it comes to power, desptie the monumental gap in price.
