China Telecom is now the second carrier in China to offer the iPhone. Until Friday, China Unicom had a monopoly on the market and was the only wireless operator through which customers could purchase an iPhone. China Telecom is offering lower monthly rates for the iPhone 4S, too, which it hopes attracts customers away from China Unicom. “For instance, a two-year contract for the 32GB model only requires a monthly payment of 489yuan, which is 97 yuan less than the same offer from China Unicom,” China Telecom marketing manager Liu Ping said during a press event in Shanghai. Customers can also get a 16GB model for free with a new two-year contract and there have reportedly been more than 200,000 pre-orders for the device.
As of January, China Telecom had a total of 130 million users on its CDMA network. Apple has struggled in the Chinese market against local companies Huawei and ZTE, which offer more affordable phones, but this will no doubt help push its products further into one of the world’s largest wireless markets.
