Time to reacquaint yourself with Google’s growing content divisions. The company on Tuesday introduced a new initiative that will rebrand all of its content entities – Android Market, Google Music, Google Books – into one big cloud-based Frankenstein. Now, the assembled elements will be known as Google Play and act as the single destination for all of the company’s buyable content. “Share your favorite music, movies, books and apps on the Web and on your Android phone or tablet,” Google wrote.
Google has long offered a wide array of content services, but they’ve all existed as separate arms under the search giant’s endless banner. To make this more unified for consumers – and make the hassle of syncing more user-friendly – Google is collecting them under one massive umbrella as a sole destination for the company’s content. Simply go to play.google.com for all of your Google-based media.
The big focus for Google Play is its cloud-based abilities. Everything – music, movies, books – is stored online and always available, so users never have to worry about losing them (or moving them) ever again. With Google Play, users can store up to 20,000 songs for free, download more than 450,000 Android apps, browse thousands of eBooks and rent movies – and all the content is seamlessly synced across a user’s devices.
Google said it will push out an upgrade “over the coming days” to users’ Android Market app to reflect the changes. Going forward, the Android Market app will be known as the Google Play Store app. In addition, videos, books and music apps will henceforth be known as Google Play Movies, Google Play Books and Google Play Music. To celebrate its new initiative, Google will be offering select content at a discounted rate over the next week.
This all somehow seems very familiar… but I can’t quite place where I’ve seen this.
