Video Surfaces of Cancelled Batman Game, Gotham By Gaslight

A few months back, Gotham by Gaslight was found to be a game Day 1 Studios (F.3.A.R., Fracture) were working on. It was a title based on a Batman comic by the same name. In that short graphic story, Batman hunts down Jack the Ripper during the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The gaming world found out about the game when steampunk flavored concept art of its menus surfaced.

Day 1 Studios tried working with THQ on the project; unfortunately, it was cancelled. The title was pitched for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms. It was planned for launch in 2009 or 2010. The video above is the first that we’ve seen of the prototype in motion, and it comes to us courtesy of the fine folks at Siliconera.

I can’t be the only one that thinks the cape in this far from finished prototype looks pretty cool. The bulk, the movement and the way it sits on the dark knight are all well done, and it perfectly fits the early design aesthetic of the locale.

We can’t help but wonder what would have become of this Batman title had it been pitched after the clear success of both Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. Those two games demonstrated that there’s a ton of love for Gotham’s cape-clad hero, maybe THQ would have stood to make good money had they published Gotham by Gaslight.

For now, all we have is a video of what could have been. Frankly, I’m in love with the idea of the project alone.
