The Last Guardian, the title being developed primarily by Team Ico (Shadow of the Colossus, ICO), has become a large and slowly progressing project. Sony hasn’t been able to peg a launch date down from the visionary designers, and the studio has seemingly suffered several setbacks.
Speaking with WIRED, Sony Senior Vice President Shuhei Yoshida explained that Team Ico is not the only studio that’s lending a hand with The Last Guardian. As he explains, several western studios are also involved with the game in at least an advisory role.
“Well, you know, it’s not just Santa Monica…We have great tech people in Worldwide Studios. We have a central tech group in the U.S. and the U.K. so we are giving them whatever help they need. Technically, we have the best engineers in the U.S. and Europe, so these teams are helping them, giving advice.”
Yoshida went on to address the game’s progress:
“At one point the progress was great, so we talked about the timing of the launch in the past. But now it’s making progress, but still not to the level — it’s playable, but not to the point that we can talk about the timing of launch.”
What this all has me wondering, and I suppose this is a good thing, how much of a technical feat is The Last Guardian shaping up to be? Fumito Ueda, Lead Designer, clearly has a vision here that’s difficult to achieve. Yoshida recently spoke about Ueda’s vision and how it’s been affecting the process:
“…Fumito’s vision is really causing a very difficult challenge for the developers, so there’s some scrapping and rebuilding…”
What is it, exactly, that we have to look forward to when this game officially drops?
