Secret OS X Lion Gesture Allows Four-Finger Double Tap to Return to Previous Space

Lion Gestures

Apple’s OS X: Lion already offers support for plenty of multitouch gestures, but Keir Thomas from CultofMac has discovered a secret one that we weren’t aware of before, and it’s quite useful. The gesture allows you to double tap your trackpad with four fingers in order to return to the last space. So, for example, if you use four fingers to swipe to a full screen application, or another of your desktops, you can quickly return to the last used desktop by tapping all four fingers at once. You just need to enter in a bit of code to get started. We followed Thomas’ instructions and opened up Terminal and entered in the following code:

defaults write com.apple.dock double-tap-jump-back -bool TRUE;killall Dock

After typing that line into Terminal we found that the new gesture worked quite flawlessly. It’s not a life saver by any means but it’s definitely useful for quickly switching back and forth between windows. We still find that using four fingers to swipe to another space works just as well, though.
