It’s hard to believe that Apple’s App Store is less than four years old. The store launched on July 10, 2008 with a mere 500 apps, with over 10 million apps being downloaded from the store during the first weekend (25% of those being free apps).

A few months later, on October 22, RIM announced that it would be opening an application store for its devices, and the next day, the Android Market launched with just 50 apps. Now less the four years later the Android Market and App Store are booming, and Windows Phone is carving out its own piece of the pie as well.

To help chronicle the evolution of the app storefronts, ShoutEm created this infographic with a play-by-play of the last few years in apps. Check it out below (click for larger version).
