The Angry Birds are going into space on March 22, and you’re invited!

Rovio, the company behind the hit game series, announced today that the next major release in the franchise will be Angry Birds Space.  This won’t be an update to any of the pre-existing games, but an entirely new download and it will be available across all platforms on the same day, March 22.

As one might expect, there will be some new physics in play since the birds will have now left the gravity of Earth behind them.  Speaking with Yahoo! Games, Rovio said that we can expect slow-motion puzzles and “lightspeed” destruction.

The company is also looking at this as an educational tool, and with that in mind they have teamed up with NASA and National Geographic as launch partners for this new project.  Andrew Stalbow, GM of Rovio North America said of the partnership, “Science and education are very important to us, and we’re very excited to have NASA and National Geographic as launch partners on Angry Birds Space.”

For aficionados of the series, you’ll be excited to know that some new birds are coming along for the rocket ride, and familiar birds will also be getting some new super powers.  No word as of yet on the details for either of those developments.
