According to a new job listing from Amazon, it appears that the e-commerce giant is looking to get into producing its own original video content.
GigaOm stumbled across some new job postings from Amazon that hint that the retailer is looking to expand the reach of its streaming video service, Prime Instant Videos, with original content. It’s looking for two new creative executives, one in the children’s field, and one for comedies. Both listings say that the new hires would report to Amazon’s Amazon’s VP of Series Development and have the the same list of duties:
- Assess pilot proposals
- Work with writers and artists to develop series ideas
- Staff, cast and produce pilots in a cost-efficient way
- Supervise series production when series are greenlit
One little oddity in the listings mentions that the content would be both “for online and traditional distribution.” Perhaps Amazon has some larger dreams than any of us suspected?
Netflix and Hulu have both been heating up in the original content space this month with Lilyhammer debuting on the former this week, and Paul the Male Matchmaker and Battleground coming to the latter next week.
Apparently all shows will come through the Amazon Studios project which already sees the company paying out some money to develop projects. Netflix and Hulu have been running their content through established firms outside of themselves, so it looks like the Seattle-based company is looking to do something where they would own everything from beginning to end.
While announcements of licensing deals with content producers is always nice to hear for these streaming video companies, it looks to me as though original content is where the battle is really beginning to shift. Now it’ll just be interesting to see if it pays off in big dividends for anyone.
