Netflix Debuts All 8 Episodes of Lilyhammer

Netflix released its first original content series today, marking a new era from the streaming content provider.

Announced just last month, Netflix released all eight episodes of its premiere original content series Lilyhammer today to its Watch Instantly streaming video customers in the U.S., Canada and Latin America.  The story follows a New York Mafioso who enters the witness protection program and asks to be sent to Norway as he fell in love it after seeing it on the Olympics.

Seeing as Norway is a centerpiece of the series, the show has been airing in the country for three weeks now and has garnered a reported 1.2 million viewers per episode.  While small compared to U.S. viewing numbers, seeing as the country has a population of 5 million, it has actually made it the most watched television series in the history of the country.

Netflix took a definite cue in how it released this series from the binge style viewing people are known to do since DVDs became popular.  As opposed to making everyone wait for a new episode to release each week, all eight episodes for the first season became available at the same time.  The series has already picked up for a second season, but no word yet as to when that might come to the Watch Instantly service, so if you really like it, you may want to space out your viewings at least a little bit.

With Hulu set to debut Paul the Male Matchmaker and Battleground next week, it’s going to be more and more difficult to say that you can’t find anything to watch on the various streaming services.

“Lilyhammer,” follows New York mobster Frank “The Fixer” Tagliano as he enters the federal witness protection program after ratting on his boss. A sports fan, Frank wants to make his new life in Lillehammer, the Norwegian town that hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics – or as he calls it “Lilyhammer.” Frank has visions of a paradise of “clean air, fresh white snow and gorgeous broads” far away from the temptations of the Big Apple and from mob hit men. Reality, of course, turns out to be spectacularly different.

All eight first season episodes of “Lilyhammer” are available beginning today for Netflix members to instantly watch by streaming over the Internet to connected TVs, tablets, game consoles, computers and mobile phones.
