Sony handsets have been cast back into the limelight following the Xperia S and Xperia Ion announcements at CES 2012. Shedding the Ericsson name, Sony is hoping its Playstation certified offerings can capture a portion of the ever expanding smartphone market. While the two phones have yet to splash down into consumer waters, Sony is busy trademarking a potential new device with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, known as Xperia Sola.
No details were included with the filing, but MobileSyrup surmises that it may be what the company will call its Xperia S. For good measure, Sola in Latin means “alone; by oneself,” MobileSyrup said. Take that for what it’s worth.
If Xperia Sola does indeed turn out to be the Xperia S, the device is expected to hit Clove U.K. in early March, but no word yet on a U.S. release. The Sola could be a whole different offering entirely, so we’ll just have to keep our eyes peeled for further news on the mysterious filing. Trademark registrations never guarantee products, however, so whether or not the Sola will appear stateside is anyone’s guess.
