It seems that beginning February 1, not only will you have to wait 56 days after a Warner Brothers movie comes out on DVD to rent it, but you’ll have to wait 28 days to even be able to add it to your queue.
To quote Lando Calrissian from The Empire Strikes Back, “This deal is getting worse all the time!”
A source with knowledge of the deal spoke with the Los Angeles Times and said that the new arrangement is yet another effort by Warner Bros. to try to boost its falling DVD and Blu-ray sales as well as declining video-on-demand rentals. In the example used, if you wanted to rent A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, you’d have to wait until March 6 to add it to your queue, and April 3 to see it arrive in your mailbox despite it going on sale at retail on February 7.
Apparently Warner Brothers has decided that by inconveniencing consumers they will somehow manage to drive them to purchasing more films. While it’s one thing to make them wait for it to arrive in their mailbox, not even allowing them add it to their queue makes no sense. As opposed to going out and purchasing the film, they’ll more than likely forget it’s even out there; Netflix could then see a drop in the demand for Warner Bros. DVDs & Blu-rays, and in turn they would then stop ordering as many. Of course, this is speculation on my part, but it isn’t exactly the most difficult logic to follow. Or, alternatively, it could just end up increasing piracy, something else that is impacting DVD sales.
Something Warner Bros. might want to learn some day is that inconveniencing consumers doesn’t tend to make them overly fond or loyal to you.
