The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Ships 10 Million Copies

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, in addition to winning multiple Game of the Year awards from outlets and events all over the world, is selling exceptionally well. ZeniMax Media, the company above Skyrim developing studio Bethesda Softworks, announced by way of press release that more than 10 million copies of the game on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC platforms have been shipped to retailers. That amount of units shipped adds up to roughly $650 million in potential sales.

Furthermore, the release goes on to indicate that the “PC version of Skyrim in North America outsold all other PC games by a factor of over three to one in the month of its release.” Undoubtedly, a massive part of those PC sales came on account of Valve‘s Steam marketplace; a point that Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve, commented on, marking Skyrim as the fastest selling title on the platform ever:

“Skyrim is the fastest selling title in Steam‘s history…Bethesda’s commitment to and understanding of the PC as a gaming platform shows in the great review scores, spectacular launch, and continued high player numbers that Skyrim has received. We are delighted that Bethesda chose to use Steamworks to support Skyrim both at retail and digitally.”

Robert Altman, Chairman and CEO of ZeniMax Media, took time in the release to thank fans and supporters.  He also used the space to point towards what’s to come for gamers:

“We are most grateful to our fans for their support and enthusiasm for the game, and their love of the hundreds of hours of gameplay it offers. We continue to strive to deliver the highest quality entertainment experience for everyone. 2012 will be another huge year for our fans, with the release of the Creation Kit, as well as exciting DLC which will add to the richness of this epic adventure.”

It’s scary to think that I’ll ever exhaust the on-disc world of Skyrim to the point that I’ll need DLC to further my addiction. But, as I’m sure most of you will agree, I’ll be there on launch when it arrives.

We’ll have more on Skyrim and its content as it comes.
