Adding more fuel to the MPGe Wars, Ford announced the 2013 C-Max Energi and 2013 C-Max in Dearborn this week. The company made a few claims about its new pair of hybrids that might give the Toyota Prius and Chevy Volt something to blow a fuse over.
I talked with Chief C-Max Engineer John Davis about the car’s highlights. Although there are no specs to speak of at the moment, Mr. Davis assured me that the Ford C-Max Energi (the plugin version of the C-Max Hybrid) will achieve a greater total range and MPGe number than the Chevy Volt and the Toyota Prius. He also said that the non-plugin C-Max Hybrid will be offered at the most affordable price the company has ever slapped on one of their hybrid models.
Although we don’t have torque values, MPGe (Miles Per Gallon Equivalent) figures and price tags to talk about, Ford announced that the C-Max Energi will achieve an approximate 500-mile total range between the lithium-ion battery and gas engine. The Chevy Volt has a 375-mile estimated total range while the plugin Prius boasts a 475-mile total range.
Think of it this way. The C-Max Hybrid is like the original Prius in that it doesn’t plug in and relies on alternating between battery and gas engine. The C-Max Energi is like the Volt and plug-in Prius in that the battery can be charged overnight to avoid using the gas engine. The Ford Focus Electric locks horns with the Nissan Leaf, running entirely on a 23kWht two-piece lithium-ion battery.
It would be great to know what kind of range the C-Max Energi can achieve on its battery alone, but in the meantime, check out the video above to learn more about Ford’s new hybrid duo.
