My husband’s a PC gaming snob — for whatever reason, he just can’t get into consoles — but now, I have a great argument that will hopefully land us the Xbox 360 or PS3 I’ve been writing Santa about. Nielsen compiled some new data indicating that these devices are responsible for more video streaming than ever.
Not only did overall usage go up (7 percent, from the first half of this year compared to the first half of last year), but thanks to services like Netflix, Hulu, MLB Network and ESPN 3, passive viewership is up across the board. Streaming accounts for 14 percent of the time spent on the Xbox 360, 15 percent for the PS3 and 33 percent on the Wii.
What else are people doing on their consoles? Well, obviously gaming, but also watching DVDs and Blu-ray discs. The breakdown follows in the chart below.
Do you own a gaming console? How are you spending most of your time with it?
