2011 is quickly coming to an end, and Google is celebrating with a showcase of the “most popular and fasting rising terms” from over the past year. The Google Zeitgeist 2011 website is now live, marking the search giant’s 11th annual year in review.
So what were we searching for most in 2011? Well, technology and gaming take up five of the top ten spots, with Google+ in second place, Battlefield 3 in fifth, the unreleased iPhone 5 in sixth, Steve Jobs in ninth, and the iPad 2 in tenth place.
Other popular search terms include the death of Ryan Dunn in third place; the earthquake that ravaged Fukushima, Japan, in March; and, perhaps surprisingly, Rebecca Black in first place.
In a post on its blog, the company explains how its improved Zeitgeist for 2011:
“With Zeitgeist, we look at the most popular and the fastest rising terms—the terms with the highest growth in 2011—in many categories across many countries around the world. For our 2011 Zeitgeist site, we’ve improved the visualizations to make it easy to compare terms across categories, added detailed infographics for an immersive dive into the data and created a video overview of the search terms that captivated the world this year.”
