Today Only: Discounted TouchPads Are Back!

by Emily Price | December 11, 2011

HP is looking to get rid of its remaining stock of TouchPads tonight on eBay.

The company will be selling the 16GB version of the tablet for $99 and the 32GB version for $149, starting at 6pm. Each customer is restricted to buying two tablets, each TouchPad comes with a 90-day warranty, and all sales are final. Purchases must also be made using a PayPal account.

HP announced last week its plans to open source webOS.

Developers, partners, HP engineers and other hardware manufacturers can deliver ongoing enhancements and new versions into the marketplace. HP will engage the open source community to help define the charter of the open source project under a set of operating principles:

  • The goal of the project is to accelerate the open development of the webOS platform
  • HP will be an active participant and investor in the project
  • Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation
  • Software will be provided as a pure open source project

Some marked the move as the final nail in webOS’ coffin, while others described it as a new birth. Depending on which side of the fence you’re on, you may or may not want to snag a discounted TouchPad today.

The fire sale is definitely at least a little bit different than the last time the tablets went on super-discount. The first time $99 was an absurdly low price for a tablet. Now we have the low-priced Kindle Fire for just $199, and many other tablets have been deeply discounted from their original iPad-like prices.

So, $99 TouchPad….who’s interested? Anyone planning on camping out on eBay tonight to pick one of these up?

Sales starts at 6pm CST. Click here to go directly to HP’s eBay store.
