Alan Wake for XBLA is not Alan Wake 2, Remedy Clarifies

Alan Wake fans around the net found themselves feeling downright chirpy yesterday after some opinions concerning the next entry in the brand came from GameTrailers TV’s Geoff Keighley. Keighley spoke with Microsoft’s Major Nelson during his recent podcast episode discussing the XBLA Alan Wake title due from Remedy Entertainment.

The word from Keighley, who claims to have seen the game in motion, is that the downloadable game is effectively Alan Wake 2:

“It effectively is, I think, Alan Wake 2 when you really look at it and what they’re doing with that game. It’s really ambitious, beautiful technology and I think people are really going to be excited about it.”

Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind the Wake franchise, has decided to step up and nullify the word from Keighley. They appreciate the compliment from the GTTV host, but they don’t really want to mince words with their fans. Here’s Mikko Rautalahti’s verbatim response to someone asking about Keighley’s comments on the Remedy forums:

“Well, I really don’t want to talk about this before the VGAs. We’ve got all sorts of things lined up and I don’t want to steal anybody’s thunder. I’m very glad that he’s excited about it, he’s obviously saying very nice things and we’re proud of the game!

However, I think that since he invokes the “Alan Wake 2″ name, I should reiterate what we’ve said all along: this new game is not Alan Wake 2, and if we intended it to be that, we’d have named it that. (I know he means it as a compliment, and I appreciate that, I just don’t want there to be any confusion about it.)”

There you have it, then. While the game may be shaping up to have all the fixins’ of a bonafide sequel, Remedy attests that this is definitely not Alan Wake 2. As a fan, though, it’s wonderful to hear that someone thinks the game is both “ambitious” and “beautiful.”

We’ll have more on the next in the Alan Wake series as it comes.
