Today when you sent out a text message, you may want to wish the service a Happy Birthday. Today text message as we know it turns 19 years old.

The first SMS message was reportedly sent on December 3, 1992 by Neil Papworth from his computer, and was received by Richard harvis of Vodafone on an Orbitel 901 handset. So, what did he have to say? “Merry Christmas.”

The technology behind the SMS message is actually 27 years old, developed in the Franco-German GSM cooperation in 1984 by Friedhelm Hillebrand and Bernard Ghillebaert. It took 6 years from that research , however, for the first message to make it to a mobile phone.
