HP To Announce Its Decision On The Future Of WebOS In ‘The Next Two Weeks’

Still wondering what’s going to happen with HP’s webOS operating system? Yeah, so are we. Fortunately we don’t have long to wait now before the company officially announces its decision on the future of the mobile platform. HP’s recently appointed CEO Meg Whitman revealed in an interview with French newspaper Le Figaro that all will become clear within a fortnight.

Questions surrounding the fate of webOS have been rampant since earlier this year, when HP announced it would cease development of its webOS hardware following poor sales of its Pre smartphone and TouchPad tablet. However, it seems not even HP was entirely certain what was happening, after Whitman noted in a recent interview that the it didn’t know “what kind of company HP [was],” and that it was “still figuring that out.”

It seems, however, that Whitman and her team have now made a decision. When quizzed about the future of webOS, Whitman told the paper:

We should announce our decision in the next two weeks. This is not an easy decision, because we have a team of 600 people which is in limbo. We need to have another operating system.

While HP’s plans for webOS have been vague in recent months, one thing the company has always been clear on is that it would not allow the platform to die. Whether that means it will be licensed to other manufacturers or sold off completely is yet to be confirmed at this point.

Whitman also stated in her interview that Apple “makes a great job,” and she admitted that the Cupertino company could take over HP in global PC sales in 2012:

Yes. I think it’s possible if you integrate the shelves. Apple makes a great job. We need to improve our game and our products to take over the leadership position. Apple could go past HP in 2012. We will try to become the champion in 2013. It takes time for the products on which will come to influence the market.

I’m looking forward to HP’s announcement. I was a fan of webOS on the Pre in particular, and I’d be delighted to see it become a huge success on better hardware under another manufacturer.

Will you be looking out for HP’s announcement, or are you already over webOS?
