Despite its noncommittal statement shortly after the unveiling of Google’s latest Android 4.0 update earlier this month, HTC has provided more information on its Ice Cream Sandwich plans, with promises that the company will update as many of its devices as possible.
The Taiwanese smartphone giant has been careful about making promises when it comes to the latest Android update. In order to avoid disappointment, and release updates that older devices cannot handle, HTC has remained reserved about its Ice Cream Sandwich plans, but its latest statement will be promising to users with recent devices:
“Since Google unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich earlier this week, HTC has been looking closely at the new OS’s features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans.
“We’re a recognised industry leader in providing fast and consistent upgrades to our Android devices, and Ice Cream Sandwich will be no different.
“Upgrades require a careful balance of hardware and software to ensure the best possible performance and usability, so please stay tuned as we assess our product portfolio.
“Our goal is to upgrade as many HTC devices as possible and we’ll be sharing details on specific devices and timing in the coming weeks!”
That statement suggests that if your device is capable of running the Ice Cream Sandwich update, and you still get an enjoyable experience under the latest Android OS, then there should be an update on its way for your device. However, thanks to HTC’s Sense UI overlay, which will need to be optimized for Ice Cream Sandwich, it may be a while before that update hits your handset.
You may remember that HTC had issues with the Gingerbread update for its original Desire handset. After promising users would get the update, the company then changed its mind when it was discovered that the device could not handle the Gingerbread OS. It later released a watered-down version of the software which isn’t much use to the average user. Its reserved attitude this time around is likely in order to prevent the same fiasco this time around.
Are you hoping that your HTC handset gets the Ice Cream Sandwich update?
