If you’re picking up Battlefield 3 for the Xbox 360 tomorrow when the game launches, you’re going to have an option to install an additional, 1.5 GB texture pack. We’ll say this here and now: do it.
The video above from WikiGameGuides.com shows off exactly what Battlefield 3 looks like both with and without the optional texture pack for the Xbox 360. That’s right, it looks downright awful if you don’t snag the pack. For those without an Xbox 360 hard drive or the hard drive space needed to get the 1.5 GB solution installed, it seems like you’re out of luck. This year’s PC graphical titan looks bad without the pack.
The PC version of the game will obviously be able to run as well as the system it’s on. As for PlayStation 3 owners, you’ll actually be installing the texture pack as part of your normal installation.
I wrote an article that ran on TechnoBuffalo over the weekend that specifically cited the obnoxious downloads that sometimes occur for new games. In the story, I actually used Batman: Arkham City‘s 250MB Catwoman DLC as an example of a download that’s too big for a day-one purchase.
Boy, now I just feel silly. 1.5GB is going to be obnoxious. At least this is an installation and I won’t be waiting on my snail-speed Internet to do the business.
