And with that, our lunch plans for today have been made. Sure, it feels a little weird to actually be excited about promotional content in games, but at least the advertising was done with a full head of steam for this program.
Basically, Subway has paired with Naughty Dog and Sony to give gamers a chance to play the Uncharted 3 multiplayer component for an entire month before the game releases. All players have to do is go into a Subway and buy a 30 oz. drink; which is, like, enough liquid space to carry gas for a trip to the moon and back.
On that “jug” of soda is a code for the multiplayer download. Use it to get into the game and start playing.
Sony posted a video detailing the full goods to the PlayStation.Blog. Here it is:
While we’ll never feel absolutely proper with the notion of corporate marketing in games, we have to admit that the marketing gurus at both companies have come up with a great campaign here. One single (giant-sized) soda lets fans into one of the year’s most anticipated titles for an entire month. The prospect of being able to get into the game early, level your character up, unlock a ton of goodies and retain all of your progress and gear for the full game’s release is impossible to resist.
Furthermore, it’s really nice as a gamer to see the continued mainstream progress of this medium. Promotions like this one wouldn’t be possible if gaming as a whole wasn’t well received by the masses. I’d rather marketing than more news stories about how terrible video games are for children.
We’re willing to bet Subway sees a lot of traction with this campaign. Kudos to them for landing this deal.
