Rumor has it that Apple is scheduling a little get together for all its media friends October 4 to announce the iPhone 5.

According to All Things Digital Apple will be holding an unveiling event for the handset on October 4th, with shipments of the handset expected to follow in the coming weeks.

While Apple could certainly change its plans anytime, sources said that the October 4 date has been selected by the company to showcase the iPhone 5. Sources added that the plan is now to make the new device available for purchase within a few weeks after the announcement.

The iPhone 5 will be the company’s first product announcement since Tim Cook took over as CEO. Cook is likely to preside over the announcement much like Jobs has in the past, with help from other top-level Apple employees who were involved in the iPhone 5 creation and development.

A new line of iPods may also be announced at the event.

Announcements for Apple events typically go out a week before the event itself, so we’re likely to know an official announcement date soon.

Anyone planning on getting an iPhone 5?
